OXFORD, Miss. -- Zamari Walton is a veteran in the game of college football, but he is a new face with the Ole Miss Rebels at cornerback, and he had his first opportunity to speak with the media on Thursday.

Ole Miss has taken advantage of the transfer portal under head coach Lane Kiffin, but Walton had his own reasons for wanting to come to Oxford after playing with the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. One of his top reasons for joining the Rebels had to do with new defensive coordinator Pete Golding.

"I thought, for me, it would be a good change to come to the SEC, to play for Coach (Pete) Golding," Walton said. "They had lost a lot of guys, and I thought it would be cool to come in and help some of the younger guys develop."

A senior, Walton feels like he fits well in Golding's defensive scheme, and his ability to adapt to different areas of the field is a plus in his game.

"Obviously, I'm a bigger corner," Walton said. "I can play anywhere. Very versatile, and I fit well with the defense."

Walton has not been disappointed since joining the Rebels. He stated on Thursday that he feels "everyone" is doing well on defense, thanks in large part to Golding's new scheme at Ole Miss.

"We've been doing a good job, honestly," Walton said. "We're just coming to work every day, acting like pros. Everybody has meshed really well, so far."

The Rebels will continue their run in fall camp throughout the month of August before welcoming the Mercer Bears to Oxford for the season opener on Sept. 2.
