RECAP: Boise State Broncos Buck Oregon State Beavers, 34-18
Oregon State fought hard, but #11 Boise State overwhelmed them.
On the opening drive, Oregon State’s defense forced a 4th and 1, but Boise State's star RB Ashton Jeanty reached the line to gain. Later, R-Soph QB Maddux Madsen found WR Austin Bolt on a drag route down the middle for an 11-yard touchdown pass. During the Broncos’ 14-play grind, Jeanty notched 8 carries for 35 yards.
That drive revealed the Broncos gameplan: feed Jeanty early and often. The Heisman contender capped his team's second drive with a bulldozing run through three defenders for a seven-yard touchdown. His efforts lifted Boise State’s lead to 14-0.
Late in the second quarter, the smurf turf’s hosts left the Beavers feeling blue, but a methodical drive destined for points resulted instead in disaster; Ashton Jeanty approached the goal-line on an impressive run up the middle, where DB Skylar Thomas met him with a well-placed punch of the ball. DB Niko Taylor recovered it at the eight-yard line.
After a nine-yard carry by freshman RB Salahadin Allah, Oregon State launched a two minute drill. 12 seconds later, they had points. A straight-forward carry by RB Anthony Hankerson started up the middle, cut back right, and ended 83 yards later in the end zone. The Beavers now trailed by a touchdown, 14-7.
The Broncos matched Hankerson’s electric run with an impressive two minute drill of their own: 8 plays, 75 yards, in just under 90 seconds. Madsen capped things off with a six-yard flick to WR Latrell Caples, and Boise State went into halftime up 21-7.
Midway through the third quarter, Jeanty seemingly extended the Broncos' lead, but his 29 yard touchdown was wiped out by a holding penalty. Boise State settled for a 43-yard field goal by K Jonah Dalmas.
Oregon State responded with a 38-yard field goal by K Everett Hayes.
Trailing 24-10 late in the third, the Beavers defense needed a quick stop. Instead, Jeanty sprinted past them 60 yards on a run up the middle. Dalmas would tack on another three points with a 29-yard kick.
On the opening play of the fourth quarter, a Gulbranson screen pass found WR Trent Walker, who suffered an ankle injury and would not return. WR Darrius Clemons filled in, with an electric catch-and-run touchdown and 2PAT jump ball to claw Oregon State within two possessions, 27-18.
After a surprise onside-kick bounced to a Boise blocker, the Beavers defense forced a crucial three-and-out. Then the Broncos defense tightened up, sacking Gulbranson for a 12-yard loss. On fourth down, WR David Wells Jr leapt for a catch beyond the sticks, but his feet landed out of bounds.
Madsen scrambled past the edge for a late touchdown, cementing the final score 34-18 Boise State. The Broncos moved to 11-1 ahead of next Friday's Mountain West Championship Game, and the Beavers season ends with a 5-7 record.
