Oregon Ducks Five-Star Commit Trey McNutt Visiting Texas A&M Aggies: Flip Looms?
The Oregon Ducks landed the nation's No. 1 safety of the 2025 recruiting class, Trey McNutt, on August 3rd. Is Oregon coach Dan Lanning and the Ducks in danger of losing McNutt's committment? The Texas A&M Aggies are making a push for the elite talent ahead of the early signing period.
McNutt is visiting Texas A&M this weekend, according to On3. The Aggies and the Ducks were McNutt's finalist teams in his recruitment. He previously visited College Station just before announcing his commitment to Oregon in August. McNutt also took an official visit to College Station in June. The belief at the time was that Texas A&M was making a massive push for the elite safety, and it appears the Aggies have not let up off the gas.
"Oregon’s different," McNutt said after picking Oregon. "Coach Lanning’s different, and the energy there is different. They’re going for a natty (national championship) and that’s what I want. We're going to make that happen."
McNutt was in Eugene when the Ducks upset the Buckeyes the program’s highest-ranked victory ever in Autzen Stadium on October 12.
The 6-foot, 180-pound defensive back is the third five-star recruit commit to the Ducks for the 2025 class, joining Dakorien Moore and Dallas Wilson, on the 247Sports Composite. Oregon's 2025 recruiting class ranks No. 9 in the nation.
The Shaker Heights (Ohio) five-star prospect became Oregon's first-ever five-star safety and earned the honor of the highest-rated defensive back commitment in Duck program history.
National recruiting analyst for 247Sports Allen Trieu says McNutt reminds him of Houston Texan Jimmie Ward.
"Track athlete who brings that speed to the football field.," Trieu said. "Playmaker with toughness and those abilities will translate to wherever a school wants to use him. Physically put-together and should be ready to play early in his career provided he gets up to speed on the coverages and roles his school needs him to play. Projects as a high-impact college player and potential early draft choice."
The early signing period begins Wednesday, December 4, 2024 through Friday, December 6, 2024. This is a three-week earlier start than previous years, moved up to the week before conference championship games.
