Oregon to Hire Mike Cavanaugh as Assistant OL Coach/Analyst, per Report
It's been a busy offseason for Dan Lanning and the Oregon Ducks. Between recruiting at a high level and managing both player and coach departures, there's been a lot of change in Eugene.
It looks like a new face is slated to join the Oregon program as the Ducks are expected to hire Mike Cavanaugh as an assistant offensive line coach/analyst, according to a report from On3's Matt Zenitz.
Cavanaugh will bring 30-plus years of coaching experience to the Oregon program.
He spent the last two seasons coaching the offensive line at Arizona State. Prior to that he was on staff at Syracuse, coaching the Orange offensive line for three years.
Other notable stops in Cavanaugh's extensive coaching career include heading up the offensive lines at Nebraska and Oregon State. He spent ten seasons with the Beavers in Corvallis, where the offensive line helped protect quarterback Sean Mannion en route to single-season and career highs his senior year in 2014.
This would be the second hire along the offensive line for Dan Lanning this offseason after hiring A'lique Terry to coach the offensive line following Adrian Klemm's departure to join the New England Patriots coaching staff. Oregon also lost offensive line graduate assistant Viane Talamaivo this offseason, who was named the offensive line coach at Northern Arizona.
Cavanaugh's hire could prove to be invaluable for the Ducks in 2023 as Terry is the youngest position coach on the staff after spending the 2022 football season helping coach the Minnesota Vikings defensive line.
Other notables hires for the Ducks this offseason include offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Will Stein, who comes over from UTSA, as well as safeties coach and co-defensive coordinator Chris Hampton, who spent the 2022 season at Tulane.
Dan Lanning now also needs to find a new linebackers coach as spring ball approaches, since Jake Long rejoined Nick Saban's coaching staff in Tuscaloosa this offseason.
