Oregon Faces its Toughest Test Yet in QB Steven Montez and the Colorado Offense
On Friday night, the Oregon Ducks will have a unique challenge, but one that they've faced before. They'll look to stop Colorado quarterback Steven Montez, who will be the most experienced QB they've seen all season.
He's a dynamic playmaker that ripped them to shreds the last time they saw him in 2016 — Montez had 333 yards with two touchdowns through the air, and 135 yards plus a touchdown on the ground.
Unfortunately for Oregon, as well, they will be without one of their more talented pass-rushers as well after Gus Cumberlander was ruled out for the season after a gruesome injury suffered last week. In his place, freshman standout Kayvon Thibodeaux will look to take his place. After notching his first two solo sacks against California, 'KT' knows that he's prepared for the increased role.
When talking to the media on Tuesday, defensive coordinator Andy Avalos credited Montez for his athletic ability, as well as his ability to keep his eyes downfield and extend plays with his feet. He called the QB and WRs in Colorado the most experienced group that the Ducks will face yet.
Still, the Oregon defense is ranked No. 10 in the nation for a reason, and their 3.93 yards-per-play allowed ranks seventh in the nation. So far this season, they've proved time and again that they're capable of stopping elite offenses, so with Avalos installing a gameplan specifically for Montez, they should have no trouble getting a victory.
