Checking in With Oregon QB Signee Austin Novosad at the Adidas All-American Bowl

Austin Novosad flipped his commitment from Baylor to Oregon during the early signing period in one of the more dramatic recruitments in 2023.

We've been covering top talent all week at the Adidas All-American Bowl in San Antonio, Texas.

One recruit we had the chance to catch up with is Dripping Springs (Tex.) quarterback Austin Novosad. The Elite 11 passer is one of the newer Ducks in Dan Lanning's 2023 recruiting class after flipping his commitment from Baylor and signing with Oregon on Dec. 21.

The 6-foot-3, 185-pound All-American has been one of the best quarterbacks throughout practice this week, firmly standing out among the likes of Dante Moore (UCLA) and Christopher Vizzina (Clemson) to name a few other gifted passers.

"Everything's kind of clicking," he said following Thursday's practice. "You can tell the receivers, running backs, everyone's kind of getting going and we're ready for the game on Saturday."

Novosad was a three-year starter in high school and described what he brings tot he table as a player.

"A true pocket passer who can make every throw and execute the offense. That's kind of me for sure."

A lot of fans were worried about Oregon's prospects recruiting a 2023 quarterback after Moore flipped to UCLA just days before signing day. One of Dan Lanning's newest hires was instrumental in flipping the former Baylor pledge.

"It started with Will Stein. Once he left UTSA and got up there he called me and was like 'Hey man I just got here, got some dudes to throw to.' "

"I knew the offense that he had kind of ran from UTSA so I knew it would be a good fit for me. So we ended up going on a visit and ended up falling in love with it."

He'd been committed to Baylor for a long time, but was Oregon ever on his radar?

"Not really," he said. "They hadn't really hit me up, but that was kind of at the same time that the Dante (Moore) thing was kind of on the rise and they kind of knew that Dante was gonna leave. Stein just kind of got me up there at the right time."

Novosad won't waste any time getting his college career started following Saturday's game.

"I actually fly out Sunday from Austin and I'll get out there midnight on Monday. I get there and start school and get rolling with workouts."

Bo Nix's return to Oregon for the 2023 season creates the perfect situation for Novosad to learn from one of the best quarterbacks in the country.

"I think it's one of the best opportunities," Novosad said. "If you're sitting behind someone you want to be sitting behind someone that's going to the NFL next year and learn how he prepares for each game and processes the concepts and stuff that we're gonna be running up there."

The Texas product fell in love with Oregon during his visit and sees some similarities between Eugene and his hometown.

"Dripping Springs where I'm from is kind of like that (Eugene). It's kind of small, excluded, kind of vibe. I think when I got out there it was kind of similar. Having so many Texas coaches on staff I really connected with them because they kind of did the same thing that I'm about to do."

He's ready to get to work in Eugene and is looking forward to the college game.

"Just learning from Coach Stein and being the best quarterback that I can be. Grow, get stronger, faster and ultimately win a bunch with Coach Lanning and the whole staff."
