Oregon Football Signee Spotlight: DL A'Mauri Washington

The Ducks signed another one of the most athletic defensive recruits in 2023, adding to an impressive haul in the trenches.
In this story:

Winning the trenches has been a major priority for Dan Lanning as he works to bring the Oregon defense to the next level.

The Ducks hit the recruiting trail hard along the defensive line in 2023, and on today's Signee Spotlight we're focusing on A'Mauri Washington, one of if not the best defensive tackle prospects out West.

SIGNEE SPOTLIGHT: Oregon OL Iapani Laloulu

Hometown/high school: Detroit, Michigan/Chandler High School (Ariz.)

Evaluation

Washington is a very intriguing prospect along the defensive line. Playing for Arizona powerhouse Chandler, he spent a lot of his time playing over the guard.

Despite being nearly 300 pounds he's very light on his feet. He shows good short-area burst and his length at 6'4" aids in his pursuit of quarterbacks and the ballcarrier. He very much has the body type recruiting experts and coaches tell you isn't typically found out West.

Another complement to his athleticism is his play style. He showcases good leverage and has a compact running style which allows him to be involved on so many plays.

Washington also has a knack for getting in the backfield, finishing his senior season with 14 tackles for loss and five sacks.

His strength and power off the line of scrimmage help him shuck blockers and eat up double teams. Even when teams double team him, Washington finds a way to impact the play, getting a hand on a ball to bat a pass or pushing his blocker into the action. In 2022 he forced two fumbles and had nine pass deflections.

The recruitment, how it happened

Washington was a highly-touted recruit before he ended up at Oregon, reeling in 22 reported scholarship offers.

He took official visits to Oregon, LSU and Oklahoma. His top four included Oregon, LSU, Oklahoma and Florida.

Washington was a frequent visitor at Oregon, also taking numerous unofficial visits to Eugene on his own dime. He was identified as an early priority by Dan Lanning and is one of three players the Ducks signed out of Arizona to continue their pipeline in the desert.

Outlook at Oregon

Washington enters a crowded room along the defensive line, as the Ducks signed 10 defensive linemen in 2023. Fortunately for him, a lot of the top players will be on their way out after next season.

His frame and athleticism could help him find the field early, but he's clearly got some solid competition along the line. The Ducks aren't in a position where they need to rely on him for crucial snaps early in his college career, but he's definitely one of the defensive recruits I'm the most excited about in this class that could has a ton of upside and brings an impressive body of work to Eugene.
