Pitt Soccer Sends Two to Paris Olympics
PITTSBURGH -- Following a successful season for Pitt Panthers Women's Soccer that ended in a loss in the Elite Eight, Head Coach Randy Waldrum and freshman midfielder Deborah Abiodun have more to celebrate. The two will head to Paris for the 2024 Summer Olympics as part of the Super Falcons.
Waldrum is the Head Coach of the Super Falcons, the Nigerian women's national soccer team in addition to Pitt women's soccer. Abiodun joined the Panthers this fall, helping in their chase for a national title.
Waldrum joined the Panthers in 2017 and has led them to their most successful seasons of record. In 2022, Waldrum led the Panthers to their first ACC Championship game and first NCAA tournament berth in program history. Waldrum is ninth in Division I history in wins and developed the first National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) draft picks in program history in 2024 with Amanda West and Landy Mertz.
Abiodun joined the Panthers as a freshman for the 2023 campaign, scoring six goals and three assists in 22 appearances with the Panthers. Her best performance came against Duquesne, notching two goals on five shots.
Waldrum was hired to head the Super Falcons in 2020, following the departure of coach Thomas Dennerby. Since Waldrum has taken over, the Super Falcons have made two straight world cups, reaching the round of 16 twice. The berth to the Olympics marks the first time the Super Falcons have made it to the Olympics since 2008, where they lost all three appearances. As a member of the Super Falcons, Abiodun has registered three appearances as well as earning a pivotal red card against Canada in the 2023 Women's World Cup.
Waldrum and the Super Falcons begin their Olympic schedule on July 25th against Brazil in a group that also features Spain and Japan.
