Former Pitt Star Cam Johnson Moved in Kevin Durant Trade
PITTSBURGH -- The NBA trade deadline brought forth a rash of player movement around the league and one former Pitt Panther was at an integral piece of perhaps the biggest deal of the year.
Former Pitt guard Cam Johnson, a Moon Township native who started 33 games for the Panthers during his final year with the program, was part of the package the Phoenix Suns - the only team Johnson had played for during his four-year NBA career - sent to the Brooklyn Nets in exchange for superstar Kevin Durant. The deal was reached
Johnson, along with Mikal Bridges and four future first round picks, were sent to Brooklyn as the return for Durant and T.J. Warren. Johnson is averaging a career-high 13.9 points per game on personal-best shooting splits from the field and from 3-point range and figures to be a foundational piece of Brooklyn's coming rebuild.
Johnson played three seasons for the Panthers under Jamie Dixon and Kevin Stallings. His final season in the Steel City in 2016-17 was his best. The sharpshooting guard averaged 11.9 points and shot 41.5% from deep before transferring to North Carolina, where he became a centerpiece of the 2019 ACC regular season champion Tar Heels. Johnson was drafted 11th overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves that summer and was then dealt to Phoenix.
