PITTSBURGH -- The Pitt Panthers were Duke fans this weekend. After beating Florida State earlier in the day, they needed both North Carolina and the Blue Devils to take down Clemson and Virginia, respectively, in the hours following their own victory to get sole possession off first place in the ACC. The Tar Heels did their part and blew out the Tigers at the Dean E. Smith Center and Duke was on their way to doing the same until a controversial foul call broke the wrong way.

Duke and Virginia were tied with just 1.2 seconds remaining. Head coach Jon Scheyer drew up a crafty inbounds play that his team executed well, giving star freshman Kyle Filipowski an open look at the rim. Filipowski was hit by Virginia's Ryan Dunn and Reece Beekman before the clock expired and the officials called a foul initially. Filipowski was going to head to the line with a chance to win the game and give Pitt sole control of first place in the league, but after a review, officials overturned the ruling, claiming the foul occurred after the time ran out.

The Cavaliers went on to outscore the undermanned Blue Devils - who had lost their starting point guard to fouls and ultimately ran out of steam - in overtime, 11-4 to secure the win and remain tied for first in the ACC with the Panthers.

Later that night, the ACC released a statement saying the call the officials made after the review was wrong. It should have been two free throws for Duke and Filipowski - a 77% free throw shooter who needed to make just one to win the game.

"The Atlantic Coast Conference, upon review of the final play of regulation during the Duke at Virginia men's basketball game, has announced an incorrect adjudication of the playing rules," the statement from the league read. "A foul was called on Virginia's Ryan Dunn during a shot attempt by Duke's Kyle Filipowski as time expired. Upon the officials' review of the play, it was determined that the foul occurred after the clock had reached 0.0. However, the play should have resulted in two free throws for Duke."

Duke didn't get the call and Pitt paid the price as well.
