GREENSBORO -- Hours after the Pitt Panthers had been bounced from the ACC Tournament and sent home to sweat out their postseason fate from Pittsburgh when the news that Georgetown had fired head coach Patrick Ewing.

After six unsuccessful seasons in Washington, D.C., Ewing was ousted in the immediate aftermath of the Hoyas' Big East Tournament loss to Villanova. As the program officially begins to search for its next head coach, Pitt's Jeff Capel was named as a possible candidate to fill the role by multiple national outlets. ESPN said Capel has been "linked to the job in recent weeks" alongside Providence's Ed Cooley (reportedly the top candidate), Penn State's Micah Shrewsberry, NC State's Kevin Keatts, Yale's James Jones and outgoing Notre Dame coach Mike Brey.

Matt Norelander of CBS Sports also put Capel on his shortlist of candidates to fill the newly vacant Georgetown job. Norelander presented it as somewhat of a longshot but something Capel could be interested in if there was a mutual feeling with Georgetown administration.

"Capel is in his 14th year running a program, the past five with the Panthers. He's got Pitt on the bubble, but quite possibly on its way to the NCAAs for the first time since 2016," Norelander wrote. "Capel (247-190 career mark) was a good coach at VCU in the 2000s, but that was admittedly a different era and at a different level and not exactly right in the heart of D.C. Still, hard to figure he wouldn't be tempted by interest, should Georgetown have interest. And a pivot into the Big East would reset his coaching clock; Capel cooled himself in a hot-seat season by finishing fifth in the ACC and getting this team to NCAA Tournament-caliber."
