PITTSBURGH -- Pitt Panthers freshman Jaland Lowe is playing the best basketball of his young career and it's earned him recognition from the conference offices.

Lowe became the second Panther to win ACC Rookie of the Week after playing easily the two best games of his short career against Syracuse and Duke - one a loss and one a critical, stunning upset victory for Pitt.

Lowe has averaged 13.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, 1.3 steals and 3.5 assists to just 1.5 turnovers per game since stepping into the starting lineup four games ago, when Ishmael Leggett was sidelined with a shoulder injury. Leggett, who's started is fully healthy now and back into game shape after missing several practices, but has stuck to a reserve role with Lowe rolling at the moment.

In two games against Syracuse and then-No. 7 Duke last week, Lowe averaged 18.5 points and 4.5 assists per game while committing just one total turnover and shooting 42.9% from 3-point range. Lowe played perhaps the best game of his career in the Panthers' upset of the Blue Devils down at Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham, North Carolina.

His clutch pull-up 3-pointer, made with 7-foot All-ACC and All-American candidate Kyle Filipowski right in his face, gave the Panthers a 75-71 lead with 42 seconds left in the game and helped seal the upset victory.

Lowe is the second Pitt player to win ACC Rookie of the Week. Fellow freshman guard Bub Carrington, who's started every game this season and is averaging 13.2 points, 4.5 assists and 5.1 rebounds per game. Carrington's won the award four times this season.
