WASHINGTON, DC -- The Pitt Panthers had to wait almost a full week but they finally found out who they will meet in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament. 

With Wake Forest's 72-59 win over Notre Dame in the second round, the Demon Deacons advance to face the Panthers in the following round. 

Wake Forest jumped out to an early 12-point lead after making their first five field goal attempts and nine of their first 13 shots by the midway point of the first half. Carey Booth kept the Irish within striking distance with 11 points on three 3-pointers in the opening period. The Demon Deacons went into intermission holding only a 40-34 lead. 

The Irish didn't make a field goal for the first 6:27 of the second half and fell back behind by 13 before finally seeing the ball go through the hoop. Wake Forest cruised to the under-eight minute media timeout still holding a 12-point lead and kept it north of double digits through the final buzzer. 

Pitt is not only contending for the an ACC crown this week in Washington, D.C. but they are fighting for their NCAA Tournament lives as well. The Panthers are currently on the outside looking in  

Pitt will tip off their quarterfinal matchup from Capital One Arena against Wake Forest at 2:30 p.m. ESPN2 will carry the broadcast.

Stephen Thompson graduated with a bachelor's degree in communications and political science from Pitt in April 2022 after spending four years as a sports writer and editor at The Pitt News, the University of Pittsburgh's independent, student-run newspaper.  He primarily worked the Pitt men's basketball beat, and filled in on coverage of football, volleyball, softball, gymnastics and lacrosse, in addition to other sports as needed.
