PITTSBURGH -- The Pitt Panthers have been working for the weekend as of late, but not because they're anticipating a rest. On Saturday, they'll return t their practice facility on Pittsburgh's South Side for an intrasquad scrimmage. Most of the team will have the license to hit and hit hard as the coaches allow for game-like intensity.

But a few players won't take many - if any - hits at all. The Pitt quarterbacks, denoted by their bright red jerseys, are off limits, according to head coach Pat Narduzzi. Kedon Slovis, Nick Patti, Derek Kyler, Nate Yarnell, Jake Frantl and Eli Kosanovich will face no contact, but still face a pass rush and full-team defense.

But the rules designed to protect those valuable players actually act as somewhat of an artificial handicap for a player like Nick Patti, who said that he considers himself more mobile than Kedon Slovis, a more traditional pocket passer that's competing with Patti for Pitt's starting job.

Narduzzi added that, while Patti might not be able to use his legs very much on Saturday, he's had plenty of time to demonstrate running ability during daily practices.

"He won't really be able to show that," he said. "They're live every day as far as running with the football. They can run with it anytime they want. But we'll stay off the red jerseys so you really won't be able to find that out."
