PITTSBURGH -- Who will start at quarterback for the Pittsburgh Panthers during their week one matchup against West Virginia is not a foregone conclusion. Fifth-year Panther Nick Patti and USC transfer Kedon Slovis are still duking it out, but at least one national writer believes that Slovis will not just start, but be one of the better signal-callers in the ACC.

The Athletic's Nicole Auerbach, in a rundown of all the most intriguing transfers in college football, said that Pitt's Slovis is a player everyone should keep their eye on heading into the 2022 season.

"He’ll be without the Biletnikoff winner to whom he expected to throw touchdowns, but Kedon Slovis should still be one of the best quarterbacks in the ACC after transferring from USC," Auerbach said. "He’ll succeed Kenny Pickett, who was named a finalist for the 2021 Heisman Trophy and broke basically all of Pitt’s passing records during his career."

Slovis is fresh off of a difficult season in which he battled injuries and failed to live up to the hype generated by a surprisingly excellent freshman year. In 2019 he threw for more than 3,000 yards and 30 touchdowns while completing 71.9% of his passes.

His numbers have since taken a dive and while self-admitted issues with his mechanics and vision didn't help, subpar offensive line play rushed his throws and even led to an injury. That's not expected to be a problem at Pitt, where he'll play behind a mightily experienced offensive line.
