Bears Fire Former Pitt Player from Assistant Coach Job
PITTSBURGH -- The Chicago Bears made some sweeping changes to their coaching staff and a former Pitt Panthers football player was one of the casualties of those decisions.
Offensive coordinator Luke Getsy, a former Pitt player and assistant coach, was relieved of his duties as offensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears this week after two years in that role.
The Bears fired Getsy alongside quarterbacks coach Andrew Janocko and receivers coach Tyke Tolbert, running backs coach Omar Young and assistant tight ends coach Tim Zetts.
The Bears ranked 23rd and 18th in points and 28th and 20th in yards per game in each of the two seasons with Getsy coordinating the offense.
Getsy, a Munhall, Pennsylvania native and Steel Valley High School alumnus, began his college career at Pitt, earning a scholarship to play quarterback coming out of high school in 2003. He then transferred to Akron after two years with the Panthers and led the Zips to its first every conference championship and bowl game appearance while breaking 24 school records in the process.
Getsy was a graduate assistant for the Panthers during the 2010 season and made other stops at Akron, West Virginia Wesleyan, IUPUI, Western Michigan and Mississippi State during his college coaching career. In the NFL, he's coached for the Green Bay Packers in addition to the Bears.
