PITTSBURGH -- Those hoping to watch a former Pitt Panther chase one of his former teammates during the preseason Week 1 matchup between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will be sorely disappointed.

Former Panthers defensive tackle and first-round pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Calijah Kancey will not play in the preseason opener, when his team hosts former Pitt quarterback Kenny Pickett and the Pittsburgh Steelers. Pickett himself is expected to play just one series.

Kancey had been dealing with a calf injury that is expected to keep him sidelined for another three weeks. He is still scheduled to be back with plenty of time for the season opener against Minnesota on September 10.

It was unlikely Kancey would have played anyway, even if he was healthy. He was listed as a starter on the first Tampa Bay depth chart of the year, which was released just a couple of days ago. Plenty of regular Buccaneers starters - Vita Vea, Lavonte David, Tristan Wirfs, Mike Evans, Chris Godwin and others - will not play either.
