PITTSBURGH -- The Pitt Panthers played and beat the Virginia Tech Hokies two weeks ago without one of their top pass-catchers. Konata Mumpfield, who leads the team in receptions and receiving touchdowns while standing at second in yards, left the Georgia Tech game early with what appeared to be a left hand injury and hasn't played since.

But Mumpfield could return to the field this week, according to head coach Pat Narduzzi. He said the transfer receiver is a gametime decision this weekend against Louisville. Should he play, the Panthers will try to get him the ball early and often.

"He's going to be a gametime decision to see if he goes or not, but if he is available, we'll try to see if we can get him going early and see if we can get him going," Narduzzi said. "We know he's a talented player but we got to get him on the field, is the first thing."

Narduzzi added that he thought Mumpfield, whose numbers so far this year have fallen short of the pace he set as the No. 1 option at Akron during his freshman season, was really starting to find his footing before exiting early against the Yellow Jackets. He was up to seven catches for 75 yards before the injury struck in the second half.

"We'll find out. Obviously, he didn't play last week but I think in that Georgia Tech game he started to get the ball in his hands and we started to get him going on some bubbles and all that," Narduzzi said.
