PITTSBURGH -- The Pitt Panthers earned half as many votes as they did in the preseason rankings but still managed to get one spot closer to the top 25 after the AP released their latest college football poll.

Pitt earned eight votes this week, down from the 16 they garnered in the preseason. But the Panthers now have the 31st-most points of any team in college football, up from 32nd, where they were two weeks ago.

Pitt is still fourth among ACC schools, trailing No. 4 Florida State, No. 17 North Carolina, No. 21 Duke and No. 25 Clemson. Miami, NC State and Louisville all also received votes. The Panthers will play four of those teams - the Seminoles, Tar Heels, Blue Devils and Cardinals, plus No. 10 Notre Dame - later this season.

The Panthers rolled past FCS opponent Wofford in their season opener behind 255 total yards and two total touchdowns from new starting quarterback Phil Jurkovec and a defense that held the Terriers to just 126 total yards, 75 of which came on their final play of the game.

Pitt will face their first major test of the season this weekend, when new Big 12 member, Cincinnati visits Acrisure Stadium for a 6:30 p.m. kickoff.
