PITTSBURGH -- Pitt football lost another player to the transfer portal, but this time, it's a walk-on and not a former starter.

Fifth-year offensive lineman George French II entered his name into the portal after spending three seasons with the Panthers. He saw no game time during his time with the program.

Standing at 6-foot-8 and 315 pounds, the Bethlehem, Pa. native originally joined Penn State as a walk-on in 2020. He then transferred to FCS program Maine in 2021, but only stayed through spring practice before entering the transfer portal and choosing to move back to his home state to join Pitt.

Despite not playing for the Panthers, French still served as a member of the 2021 team that won the ACC Championship and 10 regular season games for the first time in 40 years.

He is the fourth Pitt player to enter the transfer portal following spring practice and the 17th player to do so since the season ended.

Quarterback Christian Veilleux and starters in defensive end Dayon Hayes, plus linebacker Solomon DeShields have left the program following spring camp.

He is the second offensive lineman to depart, as Trey Andersen transferred to Utah State to move back closer to home.

French is the fourth walk-on to transfer from Pitt this offseason. Wide receiver Lorenzo Jenkins earned a scholarship at FCS program Bethune-Cookman. Long snappers Byron Floyd transferred to Buffalo and James Fineran is still in the transfer portal.
