PITTSBURGH -- The Pitt Panthers Blue and Gold spring game is fast approaching and fans will have their first opportunity to see the changes the Panthers have made since the end of the 2023 campaign. With a completely new offensive coaching staff, led by new offensive coordinator Kade Bell, and the departure of defensive line coach Charlie Partridge, the team will operate completely differently.

Other than coaches, the Panthers offseason has been headlined by a large transfer class. Some of the notable names include quarterback Eli Holstein from Alabama and defensive tackles Nate Matlack from Kansas State and Jake Overman from Oregon State. With a large transfer class and some early enrollee freshmen, this year's spring game will be rife with position battles.

Here are some to look out for:

Quarterback Battle

While it is official that Nate Yarnell will be the starting quarterback this coming season, the competition for second-string is one to look for. This spring game, Christian Veilleux and Holstein will compete in front of Panthers fans for the second-string position. Both have had positive springs, with Christian being the more experienced option and Holstein showing high potential.

Defensive Tackle

Another position battle comes at the defensive tackle spot. Following the loss of Samuel Okunlola to Colorado, the Panthers brought in two defensive ends in Nate Matlack and Clemson transfer David Ojiegbe. With Ojiegbe on the Gold team and Matlack on the Blue team, both should get a good chance to prove themselves.
