PITTSBURGH -- Pitt Panthers men's basketball wrapped up a busy weekend this past sunday, showing three potential recruits around. Two of those are transfer options, with Adou Thiero and Cameron Corhen visiting. Corhen committed to the Panthers on Monday, landing them a big man they desperately needed following the departure of center Federiko Federiko.

While the landscape of college basketball is always changing, the Panthers could land a playmaker in 6'3 combo guard, Derek Dixon. Dixon is currently a junior at Gonzaga College High School in Washington, D.C. Gonzaga is a prep school known for their dominating athletic programs, producing talents such as Kris Jenkins, Olu Fashanu, John Thompson III and the consensus No. 1 pick in the upcoming NFL draft, Caleb Williams.

Dixon has been able to compete with the best, scoring two three-point shots against pressumed 2025 No. 1 overall pick Cooper Flagg and Montverde Academy in January. Dixon led his team to the WCAC final, losing to a strong St. John's College team and landing them in No. 23 in the MaxPreps End of Season Rankings.

What sticks out about Dixon is his versatility as an offensive player. He is able to facilitate effectively while also creating shot making opportunities for himself. He operates in a very similar way as current guard Jaland Lowe does, mixing his shot selection between jumpers, the occasional drive to the hoop and three point attempts. The one distinction I would make is that Dixon shoots the three at a much higher rate than Lowe.

As the transfer portal and realignment make the landscape of college sports change constantly, there is no way to know who Dixon would be playing with. However, the style of offense Pitt fans have become accustomed to has a chance to continue, and Dixon is a great way to do that.
