Report: Cuonzo Martin Adds Former Boilermakers to Missouri State Staff
Missouri State coach and former Purdue basketball player and assistant Cuonzo Martin is loading up his staff with former Boilermakers. Two former players have been added as assistants, according to Field of 68's Jeff Goodman.
Per the report, Martin has added Carson Cunningham and Tarrance Crump to his staff at Missouri State. Both are former Purdue players. Cunningham played under legendary coach Gene Keady and Crump was a transfer who played for current Boilers coach Matt Painter.
Cunningham spent his freshman season at Oregon State (1996-97) before transferring to Purdue, where he played from 1998-2001. He averaged 10.5 points and 3.6 assists per game in his college career.
Following his playing days, Cunningham went into coaching. He spent five years at Carroll College (Montana), which participates at the NAIA level. Cunningham recorded a 107-52 record and led the team to three NAIA Tournament appearances.
Cunningham then coached at Incarnate Word from 2018-23. In his five seasons, the Cardinals posted a 42-105 record. He spent last season as an assistant coach at Army.
Crump spent two seasons at Purdue, playing under Painter from 2006-08. He averaged 5.0 points, 1.5 assists and 1.4 rebounds per game during his two years in West Lafayette.
During his coaching career, Crump has had stops at Missouri, SIU Edwardsville, Southeast Missouri, Cal and Tennessee. He most recently worked at DePaul as the director of player development.
Martin, who also played at Purdue from 1991-95 under Keady, was on staff at Purdue from 2000-08. He worked under both Keady and Painter, and coached both Cunningham and Crump during their playing days.
This is Martin's second stop at Missouri State, having previously coached the team from 2008-11. In his three seasons, he led the Bears to a 61-41 record.
Martin has also had stops at Tennessee (2011-14), Cal (2014-17) and Missouri (2017-22). He owns a 264-198 record in 14 seasons as a head coach.
Other additions to the Missouri State staff include Marco Harris and Quinn Peterson, per Goodman's report.
