Former Purdue Guard Brandon Newman Hits Transfer Portal After 1 Season at WKU
After one season at Western Kentucky, Brandon Newman has decided to enter his name into the NCAA transfer portal. The senior guard spent four seasons at Purdue prior to his transfer to WKU prior to the 2023-24 campaign.
In his lone season with the Hilltoppers, Newman started in 34 games and helped lead the team to a 22-12 record. Western Kentucky won the C-USA Tournament title, punching its ticket to March Madness.
The Hilltoppers were a No. 15 seed and were defeated by No. 2 seed Marquette 87-69 in the opening round.
Newman averaged 10.1 points and 5.3 rebounds per game in his lone season at WKU, the best statistical season of his college career. He received All-Conference honorable mention and was an Academic All-CUSA selection.
Newman entered the portal shortly after his coach at Western Kentucky, Steve Lutz, took the job at Oklahoma State. Lutz, who spent four seasons on Matt Painter's staff at Purdue (2017-21), was also at WKU for just one year.
Prior to his arrival at WKU, Newman spent four seasons at Purdue. He redshirted during the 2019-20 campaign before hitting the hardwood for the next three seasons. Newman appeared in 88 games with the Boilermakers, making 30 starts. He was a member of Purdue's 2022-23 team, which won a Big Ten regular season title and Big Ten Tournament title.
Newman averaged 6.3 points and 2.9 rebounds during his three seasons with the Boilers. He was a prominent starter for the team during the 2020-21 season, but accepted a role off the bench over the next two seasons.
Because of the NCAA's Covid-19 waiver, Newman has one season of eligibility to use at his next destination.
