Get to Know Top QB Recruit Garrett Nussmeier off the Field

While many of the nation's top programs pursue his verbal commitment, quarterback recruit Garrett Nussmeier blogs about how he spends some of his time away from the football field.

Garrett Nussmeier is one of the top quarterback prospects in the 2021 class with scholarship offers from elite programs coast to coast. He has agreed to give Sports Illustrated exclusive access into his world by chronicling everything from his experiences leading up to a college commitment as a high profile recruit to his home life and preparation for his senior season.

What's up, y'all?

I hope everybody is staying safe out there and had a great week. Last week was more of a chill week for me. Not chill in the aspect that I hit the breaks as far as working out goes, but not a lot happened last week.

My phone has been ringing non-stop and it's been interesting. It's truly a blessing and I'm very grateful for the problem but I took a lot of time this week to kind of just step back.

This week I kind of decided to give y'all an inside look on me more as a person. My future plans, my hobbies, things I like to do and how I'm passing time through this quarantine.

I'm from Louisiana. Ever since I was little, something I love to do is to fish. I did a lot of that this week. We have a house down in Orange Beach, Alabama, where we spend a lot of time during the summer and especially in times like these. It's a great place, there's a lot of boats, activities and I get to do a lot of fun and different stuff around the city.

One of the things I love most about it, people here are so nice. It is a really good fishing community and I also get to get over to the rec center to get my workouts in, throwing-wise. I really like it here.

Fishing-wise, we like to take our boat out. We have a lot of honey holes and different spots throughout the bay. Fishing is something I really love to do because it's something my grandpa taught me how to do. He passed away last July, so every time I'm out there I feel a little bit closer to him, which is really cool.

We do a lot of trout and redfish fishing out here, not a lot of freshwater fishing. It's also a really good chance to spend time with my family out on the water, hanging out and catching fish. It's one thing I really love to do, besides football.

I think there are similarities between playing quarterback and fishing. You know, there's a plan for everything you do. Especially when you're using jig heads, it's almost like a play. You're reeling pattern or how much you're jerking it and twitching it, it's almost like a play. In terms of playing quarterback, you're in full control of the bait and your job is to try and get the defender to bite.

I end most of my nights and most of my days playing Xbox or PlayStation. I play PlayStation with my friends, trying to stay in touch or continuing to crack jokes, almost trying to pretend things are as normal as possible. For me, the go-to game right now is 2K. Playing a lot of MyPlayer.

The amount of time I spend on social media has increased, especially with just keeping up with that my friends are doing. The app I use the most is definitely Snapchat. I'm Snapping all my friends, seeing how they're doing. Lots of group chats, lots of fun jokes and stuff.

I also just put out a cool edit that was made by my friend Joey Addicott (@joeyaddicott), he does a lot of my stuff along with another really good creator by the name of J Litt (@itsjlitt). Those have been the guys that have done a lot of my video stuff for me and have done everything for me. Jordan, J Litt, will also be doing my commitment video when the time is right.

As far as school-work, I typically get on once a day and check my calendar. We have about four assignments due, one from each class, on Sunday. As far as what I want to study in school, I haven't really decided yet. I'm interested in learning different options. My main goal after I'm finished playing football one day, hopefully after a long time, is to become a coach.

Being a coach's kid and seeing my dad do it is just something I've always wanted to do. It's what also pushes me to continue to grow my football IQ. That's the ultimate plan one day. I want to start as a quarterbacks coach and then hopefully work my way all the way up to a head coach one day.

I think even if I was a head coach, I would want to call plays. I think I'm going to give the quarterback a lot of control but I think it's going to be a mix of what I've learned in the air raid system and what my dad has always done in the pro style system. I think it will be a mesh between pro style, a little bit of RPO and some spread concepts.

I appreciate y'all tuning in to read this week. I'm really excited to talk to you again next week, so log on!

Thanks,

Garrett.
