Under Armor All-America Phoenix - Speedsters that Showed Out
GILBERT, Ariz. -- Higley High School played host to the once-a-cycle trip out west from the Under Armor All-America Camp Series. Athletes from across the Southwest (Utah, Colorado, Nevada) descended upon Arizona to compete under the desert sun; Some with the intent on earning a coveted invite to the Under Armor All-America Game, others hoping to embarrass those more well-known recruits who set their sight on the golden ticket.

After the Big Man Challenge [Recap] concluded, the leaner bunches took center stage to run through their drills and get their feet under them prior to the competition portion of the event. Given these events aren't perfectly suited to replicate in-game conditions (which isn't necessarily the intent), the athletes that are the fastest often look the best. Saturday was day was no different. Pine View, Utah products and twin brothers Dominique and Marcus Mckenzie both shined bright Saturday, as the two fastest on the field. We caught up with the class of 2022 duo at the conclusion of the camp.
"I actually had a track meet last night," said Domonique, "broke the (Utah) state record in the 200, so, my legs were a little shot, but still felt good."
Fresh off a state record, it was evident in the one-on-one period that Dominique's cruising speed was some of the other player's sprinting speed. There was nobody, other than perhaps his twin brother Marcus, that could catch him in the secondary. Dominique currently has offers from Pittsburgh, BYU, Oregon, Utah State, San Diego State, and more.
"I haven't been in too much contact with BYU, I haven't gotten too many calls, but the people that have been hitting me up the most has probably been Oregon, Pittsburgh and Utah State," he said.
Dominique currently holds no one school above the next.
We asked about his Oregon offer, "I like their winning mentality, back-to-back conference championships, their facilities, what they require of and for their athletes so they're always at their best.
"I see myself playing outside receiver. They need a guy that can stretch the field, really spread the defense, and catch short balls and go for big yards."
Dominque currently has one visit to Pittsburgh tentatively scheduled this summer.
Defensive back/athlete Marcus Mckenzie also noted BYU's recent slow down in contact, which consequently has turned his sights to other interested parties out West. UNLV, Utah State, and Arizona, a coaching staff he was complimentary of, have all offered the Pine View product. He's hoping to hear from Oregon, like his brother has, and told SIAA "It would be nice" to commit to the same school as his brother, "but we're okay if we go our separate ways."
Lining up a little closer to the hashes on that Saturday afternoon was class of 2022 running back/Slot man Quaron Adams (Chandler). Adams was the most explosive athlete on the field all day and ran some of the best routes of the day, too.
"It's always a wonderful feeling, getting out here with some of the best guys in the state and the area, and competing. That's what it's all about."
Not only were his routes crisp, but Adams also displayed ankle-breaking agility and flat out dogged some defenders to the turf without even touching them.
His junior film is filthy, and he's got range to play all over the field. Iowa State sees that same utility, evident when Adams told SIAA that, "a guy with my skillset, they (Iowa State) said they could put me multiple places, but their main fit for me would be slot receiver."
"Their culture is outstanding, they know who they want, and they think I would be. a great fit."
Iowa State and the University of Arizona are the two schools Adams is seriously considering at the moment. Adams says he's got a visit planned to Iowa State in June.
Other notable performances via Under Armor All-America Football Committee:
Running Back MVP - Anyale Velazquez (Corona Del Sol)
Linebacker MVP - Carson Tabaracci (Park City)
Quarterback MVP - Ridge Docekal (Saguaro)
Wide Receiver MVP - Quaron Adams (Chandler) and David Washington (Arbor View)
Defensive Back MVP - Justyn Rhett (Bishop Gorman)
We had to double-take after hearing that David Washington (Arbor View) was just a freshman (class of 2024), given he looked far more developed than many of his 2023 and 2022 counterparts with a sturdy yet cut build. Given Washington's size and his relative youth, he may end up moving closer to the middle of the field to sort of a Y-tight end as his development progresses, but will play both slot and out wide during his first high school season come his sophomore year at Arbor View High in Las Vegas, Nevada. He can move well, and caught a handful of off-target passes on Saturday. Washington was offered by Washington State this past November, which currently stands as his lone offer.
Washington tells us Arbor View will host a series of padded practices this spring, but his first live high school snaps will come during his academic sophomore year, in Fall 2021.
