Top RB Zach Evans' Commitment Known 'For a Long Time'
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- What Zach Evans has long known, the rest of us will soon find out.
The Houston (Tex.) North Shore running back, the top uncommitted prospect at the position in the class of 2020, will make his choice public Thursday at the Under Armour All-America Game. But internally, the battle for one of the best has long been settled.
"It feels good, I'm minding my business," he told SI All-American following Sunday evening's practice. "It feels great to be done, I don't have any pressure on my chest, nothing else to worry about. I can just come out here and ball.
"I knew for a long time, I just had to take my officials to verify everything. It's the new offense they run, that's it."
Dropping a hint at the destination, Evans previously told reporters he was considering Georgia, LSU and Alabama down the stretch. Texas, Texas A&M and many others were once involved for the prospect claiming more than 40 scholarship offers throughout the recruiting process.
The 5-foot-11, 200-pound prospect actually signed a National Letter of Intent during the Early Signing Period but he and the institution of choice agreed not to release the news until he gets his national television moment Thursday night.
Despite the finality of Evans' recruitment, it hasn't stopped other UA All-Americans from putting in one final word for their program. After practice on Sunday, LSU offensive line signee Marcus Dumervil shouted, "he's going to LSU!"
In the middle of our interview with Evans, his high school teammate and Alabama offensive line commitment Damieon George created some laughs by very calmly stating "You can't take any more of my running back's time."
A relaxed Evans said other prospects have been in his ear throughout the week.
"Every day," he said. "Every moment somebody has been walking up and saying something."
An off-the-field sample of one pitch for one school?
"The females," he said with a laugh.
Evans admits he hasn't given much thought to the reaction of his destination once it goes public between the SEC powers.
"Some are going to be happy, some are not," he said. "It's whatever y'all want it to be."
Coming off of a 1,600-yard senior season at North Shore, Evans brings plenty to the table out of the backfield. He sees himself as a three-down running back with home run ability whenever he touches the football. But his top traits, he says, aren't about his natural talent.
"I'm about that action, boss," he said. "It's just my drive and the coaching I'll be able to take. I understand that at the next level it's different. I'm coming in open-minded, I'm coming in to be whatever they need me to be. It's what I do outside of the football field, taking care of my body.
"Athletically, I'll just let them talk."
The 2020 Under Armour All-America Game will take place Thursday, January 2 at Camping World Stadium in Orlando. It will be nationally televised by ESPN2 at 6:00 p.m. ET.
