DALLAS — New Duke coach Manny Diaz has a new offensive coordinator that will have an idea about SMU's defense next season. Rhett Lashlee's quarterbacks' coach and co-offensive coordinator Jonathan Brewer will be leaving to take over as the sole offensive coordinator for the Blue Devils next season. They will play the Mustangs at some point next year.

Brewer was on Diaz's staff at Miami with Lashlee so it really isn't a very surprising move. Especially consider the play of quarterback Preston Stone's development into a solid quarterback this year. Stone led an offense that combined with a stingy defense to win 10 games, then an AAC title with a win over Tulane with redshirt freshman Kevin Jennings behind center.

Lashlee Drawing National Notice with Big Season

Developing quarterbacks has been a strong suit of Brewer in two seasons at SMU. Working with Casey Woods, he developed Tanner Mordecai into the eighth-best passing season with 33 touchdowns last season. With the Mustangs headed to the ACC next season and going forward, it's a good move for Diaz on a couple of fronts.

The Ponies will play Boston College in the Wasabi Fenway Bowl in Boston on Dec. 28 at 10 a.m. on ESPN and fuboTV.
