DALLAS — Yes, SMU's defense is in the Top 10 of the national stats right now, but defensive coordinator Scott Symons isn't putting much into that considering Saturday's game against Memphis at the Liberty Bowl will be against the best team they've seen in ... well, maybe all year. Even Oklahoma.

"Honestly they might be better than Oklahoma," Symons said Tuesday. "Looking at them just all the way around. Great running back, really seasoned quarterback and elite at wide receiver and really good and solid offensive line. There's a reason they're putting up basically 50 points a game in their last three or four games."

The Tigers have lit up the scoreboard lately. They are 8-2 on the season, just like the Mustangs, and have only lost to Missouri and Tulane. Oh, throw in that the Ponies are 2-6 all time in Memphis and you have the makings of a big game right here at the end of the season.

"Most of these guys weren't here two years ago when we played over there last time," Symons said. "It's a tough place to play. At the end of the game, it just goes back to the next game and we've done a good job focusing and preparing on the road and we'll have to do the same this week"

The Mustangs know what they are facing and the defense is striving to stay on the script of taking it one game at a time. They aren't looking at the bowl projections and everything else right now, because that's how they got put in the position they are in.

"Our guys understand that it's the next game," Symons said. "Our approach doesn't necessarily need to change. If anything it needs to be heightened. I don't want our guys to play tense. I want them to be confident and we want them to be comfortable and go out and play at a high level and they give themselves an opportunity for this game to mean something down the road. There's another game after this game. We've got to go focus on the one at hand and that's a tough football team on the road that's playing at a really high level."

Kickoff for the game is 11 a.m. and will be televised on ESPN2 and fuboTV. You can hear the game in the DFW area on The Ticket 96.7 fm and 1310 am.
