DALLAS — Folks might want to start paying just a little attention to what SMU is doing for groundwork on a recruiting class for 2025 as they picked up another four-star commitment Friday, according to published reports.

This is just another of what kind of players Mustangs coach Rhett Lashless is starting to build after last week's announcement they will be going to the ACC next year. DeSoto, Texas, four-star recruit Daylon Singleton is now on the list.

According to 247Sports' recruiting index, he is the 38th-ranked overall player in the state of Texas for the 2025 class and the No. 31 wide receiver in the country. That's not the most intriguing thing to start watching, though it is a big positive.

It's way to early to start making any bold claims about much of anything for recruiting in 2025. Some teams try to get future recruits to hold off on making any such big announcement on social media, but that's almost impossible with a verbal pledge. But there's an early indicator that says you might want to give the Ponies a look now and then as this progresses.

They are ranked No. 8 at 247Sports, which at this stage is nothing to start hiring a band and planning a parade for that far in the future. It's the average of each recruit, which is solidly in the mix with some programs that will likely finish there.

SMU has only three recruits for that 2025 class, but they are all four-star recruits as a junior in high school. Lashlee is at least getting some early attention from high school players. People like to say those rankings don't means anything and it doesn't mean you're going to play like it. That's up to the player themselves and the coaching staff.

But coaches everywhere have said forever it's no guarantee you'll be playing for championships, but if they don't land them your odds of doing it tend to get much better. The numbers are what they are. It's just one more thing to give an occasional glance at as this gets started. It may mean nothing or it may be an early indicator.
