A Look Back At South Carolina's 2023 Baseball Season
Mark Kingston and the South Carolina Gamecocks saw their rollercoaster ride that was the 2023 season end this past Saturday night when they lost game two of their super regional matchup with the Florida Gators. With the season now having reached its conclusion, there's a wide range of opinions that have poured out from the fanbase, some of which are proud of the team for going on their deepest postseason run since 2018, and others who, while happy the team didn't throw in the towel, believe this team could've done more.
As with every possible debate in sports, the answer to whether or not this team met the overall expectations set on them before the season lies somewhere in the middle. In a general sense, this season was a mixed bag of results.
No one can deny that the beginning of the season, particularly the first 40 games, saw South Carolina make the case that they were the best team in all of college baseball. The Gamecocks secured series wins over postseason teams like Clemson, Florida, and Penn, earned a midweek shutout victory over another regional entry in North Carolina and split a two-game bout with the LSU Tigers, who are now moving on to Omaha.
As injuries began to pile up, however, the team saw a noticeable dropoff in their collective on-field performance, as they lost each of their last four SEC series in the regular season and went only three games deep in the SEC Tournament. While the bats heated back up in the NCAA Regionals, the Gamecocks seemingly ran out of gas against a Florida Gators team who'll be a tough out for anyone they face in the College World Series.
Thus, South Carolina won't be a fixture in Omaha for the eleventh straight year, a place that became their second home under legendary coach Ray Tanner. For some, that's completely unacceptable for a program proven to be one of the best in the sport over the past half-century. Others understand the varying frustrations over the lack of postseason success but believe that Mark Kingston and his team still have the pieces to potentially go on a run in 2024. As the year progresses, we'll see which players will leave, which ones will return, and how things shape up for what will be a crucial offseason.
