2023 was quite the year for South Carolina's Baseball program. The team made it to the Super Regional round of the NCAA Baseball Tournament for the first time since 2018, was a Top 16 National seed for the first time since 2016, and saw six players get drafted a little over a month ago.

For the first time in what feels like forever, Gamecock Baseball once again feels like a force to be reckoned with on the national stage. A big reason for that is the work that Mark Kingston has put in behind the scenes. Kingston brought in multiple impact transfers in the 2022 offseason, like Will McGillis, Gavin Casas, and Chris Veach, and has done so again this offseason.

Mark Kingston also did something that took a lot of guts: bring in a former head coach in Monte Lee as his top assistant despite the questions surrounding his job security. Some coaches would worry about being overshadowed in those circumstances, but Kingston made a move that was regarded by some as one of the best assistant coaching hires of the 2022 off-season.

This all culminated with the news that came out on Friday afternoon, as it was reported by multiple outlets that Mark Kingston received a two-year extension and $125,000 annual raise, meaning Kingston is now making $725,000 per year through 2027. Should the Gamecocks wind up making another deep postseason run next season, this contract could have to be revisited once again.
