When looking back at the greatest three-year stretch in Gamecock baseball history, which took place between 2010 and 2012, there were plenty of players that served as vital cogs in South Carolina's run of postseason dominance, including Michael Roth, Matt Price, Jackie Bradley Jr., and Whit Merrifield. While Gamecock fans will never forget Merrifield in particular for his title-clinching hit in Game Two of the 2010 College World Series Finals against UCLA, he's also etched out a nice long MLB career for himself, compiling over 1,000 career hits, a lifetime batting average of .285, and stealing 193 total bases.

Merrifield spent his first six full seasons in the majors with the Kansas City Royals but was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays in the middle of the 2022 season to serve as a veteran piece for the up-and-coming AL East ball club. So far this season, Whit has been his usual productive self, batting .282 in 304 plate appearances and batting in 30 runs.

His play in Toronto has clearly won over the hearts of Blue Jay fans, as it was revealed on Sunday night that Merrifield was voted as an MLB All-Star reserve for the outfield of the American League.

This is the third time in his MLB career that Merrifield has been named an all-star, the most amongst all former Gamecocks who are actively on an MLB roster.
