Few teams had a better opening weekend in college baseball than Mark Kingston and the South Carolina Gamecocks. Although they were facing a Miami (OH) team that was outmatched in almost every aspect, baseball can be a fickle sport where sometimes teams can sneak up on you if you don't play fundamentally sound; Carolina wound up outscoring the Redhawks 30-5 and threw a combined no-hitter on Sunday, just the eighth time in program history such a feat has been accomplished.

Now, the season's grind in terms of the number of games played begins later this afternoon when the Gamecocks take on the 0-3 Winthrop Eagles. Winthrop is coming off of a tough three-game series against Rutgers, where they lost two games by a combined three runs, so South Carolina shouldn't overlook their in-state counterpart in this matchup.

The Eagles' strength appears to be their pitching, as outside of three pitchers this past weekend, only one earned run was given up to the Scarlet Knights. The pitcher taking the mound for the Gamecocks tonight will be Eddie Copper, who came on in a relief appearance in game one versus Miami (OH) this past Friday but seemed to let his nerves get to him in the moment. It'll be interesting to see how Copper, who was ranked 168th best prospect in the 2023 class by Perfect Game and labeled by Kingston as "one of the [team's] best pitchers through the entire preseason" this past Friday, handles his first career start for South Carolina later today.

Probable Pitching Matchup (Per GamecocksOnline)

South Carolina: Eddie Copper (Fr. RHP) 0-0, 0.00 ERA, 0.0 IP, 0 BB, 0 K

Winthrop: Brady Houston (Jr. RHP) 0-0, 0.00 ERA, 3.0 IP, 0 BB, 2 K
