FINAL: Gamecocks Take Care Of Business Against Queens, Winning 13-3
Playing their fifth game in six days, the South Carolina Gamecocks looked to remain unbeaten against the winless Queens Royals on Wednesday afternoon. Thanks to two big innings at the plate and another solid collective effort on the mound, Mark Kingston's squad moved to 5-0 on the season.
After Matthew Becker got out of the top of the first inning with no damage allowed, the Gamecocks didn't wait long to break things open, scoring three runs off of Queens' right-hander Joey Ruller via a Cole Messina rocket over the left centerfield wall, and a bases-loaded walk drawn by Will Tippett. Becker would only go on to pitch one more inning, and while he got himself into some trouble due to his command in early counts, he finished his short outing allowing four baserunners and no runs while striking out five batters.
In the top of the 3rd inning, freshman right-hander Tyler Pitzer would get into some trouble after a balk put two previously walked batters in scoring position but bounced back with two strikeouts to end the Royals threat. In the bottom of the fourth, South Carolina would see another offensive surge thanks to some help from Queens, as they would plate five runs, two of them unearned, via a Talmadge LeCroy single followed by a fielding error, a fielding error on a Tyler Causey hit to short, a throwing error on a Dylan Brewer dribbler in the infield and a two-RBI double from Ryan Bakes.
After reaching base just six times in his first 14 at-bats this season, Ethan Petry put together his best performance at the plate to date, drawing two walks and recording two hits, including a solo home run in the 5th inning, reaching base in each plate appearance. The Gamecocks will be back in action on Friday when they begin their second 3-game series of the season against Belmont.
