Series Primer: No. 21 South Carolina Vs. Belmont
Much like the 2023 season, the South Carolina Gamecocks are off to a hot start on the baseball diamond, having already run-ruled all three opposing squads they've gone up against and, so far, dominating both at the plate and also on the mound. This weekend, Mark Kingston's team will take on the Belmont Bruins, who based on what they did last season (27-33 record) and so far this season (4-1) while likely provide a slightly stiffer challenge for the Gamecocks.
The Bruins are an experienced bunch, returning nine players who started 40 or more games in 2023. The player to watch in Belmont's batting lineup is Mason Landers who was named a second-team All-MVC selection in 2023 and is slashing .333/.444/.533 with one homer and six runs batted in in fifteen at-bats to start this season. On the flip side, the Bruins don't have as much proven depth in terms of pitching, but their projected Friday night starter, Will Pryor, recorded an impressive 4.22 ERA and 2.76 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 59 and two-third innings pitched this past Spring; relief pitchers Jett Thielke and Hank Liss will likely serve as Belmont's top options out of the bullpen should they be given the opportunity.
