RELEASE: South Carolina's Athletic Department Announces Partnership To Honor Gamecock Jesus
What makes sports so magical is the bond that can be created between an entire fanbase or a particular fan and a team. For a long time, when people have thought of South Carolina basketball, they likely also thought about Carlton Thompson or Gamecock/Baseline Jesus, as everyone affectionately knew him. Thompson was an alum of the school's College of Nursing, and his days as a fan dated all the way back to when the great Frank McGuire was coaching the Gamecocks at the opening night of the Carolina Coliseum in 1968.
Unfortunately, Carlton passed away this past December, leaving a void in the hearts of Gamecock basketball fans everywhere. Since then, people have been awaiting any news of potential plans to honor this legendary alum, fan, and person, and today, that news finally came down, as the athletic department, in partnership with Palmetto Shirt Co., will sell a special t-shirt where all the proceeds will be donated to charity.
The charity organization that will receive the proceeds will be the Special Olympics of South Carolina. You can find the shirt at palmettoshirtco.com.
