Gamecocks' Win 68-62 Nail-Biter Over ECU
Lamont Paris and the Gamecocks headed into Saturday afternoon hoping to return to their winning ways. One of the keys for that to happen would be for BJ Mack and Myles Stute to get back into a groove offensively and provide a consistent scoring threat. It wasn’t always pretty, but South Carolina found away to win 68-62.
The biggest story in the first half would be how big Mack and Stute were, with Meechie Johnson not being able to play for most of the first half due to foul trouble. Both would combine for 18 points, which would give the Gamecocks just enough momentum heading into the half up seven points.
Coming out of halftime, the Gamecocks would have a rough start to the half, where ECU would go on a quick 10-3 run. They needed to survive the early punch from the Pirates, and they would do just that. Both teams would, however, trade shots for the majority of the second half.
Meechie Johnson came up big for the Gamecocks toward the back half of the game and would finish with 15 points. He hit multiple clutch shots, including one from three, heading into the final media timeout. While it wasn’t the game coach Paris or the team wanted, they found a way to toughen through the second half and win. The Gamecocks will move on and prepare to face Charleston Southern next Saturday.
