FINAL: South Carolina Crosses The Century Mark In Blowout Win Over Kentucky
Pull out the speakers, and everyone sit on the hood of your car in front of Rupp Arena because it was a block party. Coming into the game looking to move to 26-0 on the season, South Carolina had seven first-half blocks against the Kentucky Wildcats, with Raven Johnson and Te-Hina Paopao even getting in on the action. The No. 1 team in the country in average blocks per game finished with ten in total.
Things began in a dominant fashion for the Gamecocks, with their defense being the driving force, capitalizing on all the Wildcats' first-quarter turnovers (seven) and turning them into 14 points. Kentucky forced some turnovers of their own with well-timed charges, but Coach Dawn Staley's team was unfazed, going into halftime up 20. Freshman MiLaysia Fulwiley led all scorers in the first half with 11 points and a steal.
Almost stretching the lead to 40 points, the Wildcats began to find themselves in foul trouble, playing four players with three fouls or more with four minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. The inevitable came to pass, as the clock hit triple zero with South Carolina winning 103-55; the victory is their fourth without Kamilla Cardoso. Six different Gamecocks wound up in double figures, with Fulwiley finishing with 17 points on a perfect 12-12 from the free-throw line and Bree Hall shooting a blistering 80 percent from the field on ten total shots.
