Report: Dawn Staley To Get Statue
When Dawn Staley took over the South Carolina Gamecocks women's basketball program in 2008, she was taking over a program that had only made the NCAA tournament four times over the 18 years preceding her arrival. While she was a star for the Virginia Cavaliers in her college playing days, a multi-time gold medalist on the United States Olympic Team, and a multi-time all-star in the WNBA, many doubted her coaching ability when hired.
That question is one that's laughed out of the room nowadays, as Staley has won 78 percent of her games and counting at South Carolina, made it to the Final Four on four different occasions, and won two national titles in her career. She's now widely viewed as the best coach in women's college basketball, and her accomplishments have now led to an extremely high honor, as The State Newspaper has reported Staley will soon have a statue.
Staley and her squad are currently on a quest to win the program's third national title and got one step closer to accomplishing that feat after besting Geno Auriemma's UConn Huskies on Sunday.
