South Carolina's Four Most Important Games In 2023
If the past two years are any indication, South Carolina's 2023 football season will be filled with high stakes, thrilling finishes, and memorable moments. As we look forward to another exciting season, let's focus on the key games that could define their campaign this Fall.
1) Mississippi State vs. South Carolina
Some may see this game and start scratching their head while saying, 'How? How is THIS the most important game?' Well, not only is this game in between two extremely challenging road games against Georgia and Tennessee, but it's also one that can keep the Gamecocks' hopes of a nine or ten win season plausible. The Gamecocks have a chance to take one of those away games from the Vols or Georgia, but they MUST beat Mississippi State to keep their biggest season goals alive.
2A) Florida vs. South Carolina
Facing the Florida Gators will be another defining moment in the Gamecocks' 2023 season. Last season's 38-6 loss is still glooming over the head of the Gamecocks, and they look to move forward and right that wrong. This game comes right after their bye week, so a win would significantly boost their confidence and could set the tone for the back half of the regular season.
2B) South Carolina @ Missouri
The Gamecocks' encounter with Missouri is another significant game in their 2023 season. You could argue that this game should be in the 2A spot, and I wouldn't disagree. Both of these contests are revenge game opportunities for South Carolina, and neither of these schools has any glaring advantages over the Gamecocks that they don't have themselves. To add to the importance of this game, South Carolina hasn't beaten Missouri since 2018, a streak they need to end to further increase their perception.
4) Clemson vs. South Carolina
Few games are more highly anticipated than the clash between the Gamecocks and the Clemson Tigers. In their 2022 season, the Gamecocks managed to pull off an upset; this victory not only gave the Gamecocks bragging rights in the state but also served as a testament to their growth and potential. So, of course, we must include this classic game.
In retrospect, the 2023 season is a landmark one for the South Carolina. The team will face several challenging opponents but have the chance to validate some of the surprising victories they strung together last Fall. Their performance in those critical games have set high expectations and has laid a solid foundation for hopeful, continued success in the future.
