Nyckoles Harbor Exuding Toughness, Pushing Defensive Leader
Shane Beamer and South Carolina's Football program are about a week and a half into a pivotal Fall camp stretch that will lead into their week one matchup against the North Carolina Tar Heels on Sept. 2nd. Over the past ten days, the third-year head man and his staff are learning a lot about what this team will possess in 2023; what are their strengths and weaknesses, which veterans might step up and break out and which freshmen could contribute right away?
Coaches and fans alike hope that one of the answers to the last question is Nyckoles Harbor, the highly-touted five-star athlete from the Washington, D.C., area who signed with the Gamecocks in the 2023 cycle. Harbor is spending his first few months in Columbia transitioning to the wide receiver position, partly so that Nyckoles can avoid accumulating too much wear and tear and, thus, continue his track career while in college.
This has led some people, especially those who are fans of other programs, to question whether the 18-year-old's heart is truly in it when it comes to Football. Based on Shane Beamer's comments from his post-scrimmage presser this past Saturday, there should be no questions about Harbor's love for the gridiron.
"I thought Nyck did some good things [on Saturday]. We got him out there, and he operated efficiently," Beamer stated. "He's a tough kid. You worry about some of these track guys sometimes. Do they just wanna come out there and just run fast and shy away from contact? Not that guy. He is tough and physical."
Habor has been described as a player that doesn't come around often due to his freakish combination of size and speed he brings to the field, and his athletic prowess has already caught the attention of one of South Carolina's defensive leaders, per coach Beamer.
"Torrian [Gray] was kidding with me the other day that Nick Emmanwori's upset cause Nick felt like he was the fastest guy on the team, and now Nyck Harbor's come in and kinda apparently taken that mantle, and so there's great competition in practice," Shane explained. "Every time I see any kind of one-on-one rep going on with Nyck Harbor, there's a pretty good chance that Nick Emmanwori is out there competing against him, which is gonna make both of those guys better."
No matter how long the transition takes, it's clear that Nyckoles is already making a positive impact for the Gamecocks, which could pay dividends this Fall.
