Analytics Site Names Two Gamecock Assistant Coaches Among Best In SEC
Shane Beamer has had incredible success during his first two seasons in Columbia. He took over a team coming off of a two-win season in the 2020 offseason and has since led them to two bowl games and won three games over Top 25 opponents, including two monumental wins over Tennessee and Clemson this past November.
While Beamer has so far shown that he can be a head coach that thrives in the toughest conference in college football, he hasn't done it without some help from some of his assistants. Defensive Coordinator Clayton White was a Broyles' Award nominee in 2021 due to his work with the Gamecocks' defense. The units under Special Teams Coordinator Pete Lembo were consistently rated as the best in college football in 2022, and defensive backs coach Torrian Gray has excelled in player development over the past two seasons.
On Friday, 247Sports' Brandon Marcello, a national college football writer, released a piece rating the top coaches in the SEC, with the bulk of the work involved in rating the coaches being done by Matrix Analytical Solutions, which works as a consultation firm for a bevy of college athletic departments. In their final ranking, South Carolina defensive backs coach Torrian Gray and special teams coordinator Pete Lembo were named to the All-SEC Coaches First Team group, with both being rated as 4.5-star coaches by Matrix Analytics.
Lembo was given immense credit for what his units did last season and the sustained track record of developing specialists at the FBS level, the latter being the same reason Torrian Gray made the list. Both coaches will be dealing with their own unique situations this Fall, as Pete Lembo will have all three specialists coming back for the first time since his arrival in Columbia, while Torrian Gray will look for some players to fill in the shoes of Cam Smith and Darius Rush, who are now in the NFL.
