Shane Beamer On NIL: "A Lot Of Things Could Be Better"
Ever since the NCAA began to allow athletes to profit off their name, image, and likeness in the summer of 2021, coaches have had many issues regarding how it's utilized versus what it was meant to do. It's led both coaches and even commissioners, including the SEC's Greg Sankey, to call on politicians in Washington, DC, to create legislation to help put up guardrails around the NIL space.
On Wednesday afternoon at his charity event, Birdies With Beamer, Shane Beamer was asked what he would include in an NIL Law if he was a US Senator. He started his remarks by clearly stating that he's in favor of NIL and supports his athletes' pursuit of capitalizing on it.
"I'm in favor of it and wanna help our players in any way in supporting Name, Image, and Likeness - I'll do everything that I can to help them be able to capitalize on it, if they've earned it."
Then Beamer dove into the main crux of his issues with NIL, which is that programs have started to use NIL as a recruiting tool, essentially promising money upfront, something that Shane believes goes against the original intent behind NIL and can put the players at risk.
"Name Image and Likeness was implemented for student athletes to truly be able to capitalize on their name image and likeness. What it's turned into is buying players and pay-for-play in recruiting, and that's not what it was intended to be. So, I would love to write a bill or have a law that gets that a little bit under control, and then certainly some protections for student athletes as well."
Continuing his answer regarding the protection of student-athletes, Beamer conveyed that the secretive nature of NIL has created a continuous rumor mill that can mislead athletes who prioritize NIL when deciding which school they want to go to.
"I'd love to see a little bit more transparency, cause that's one of my frustrations is there's just a lot rumor out there about what certain guys are getting paid at different schools. If there was just a little bit more transparency where everybody knew what everybody was getting, great. It would clean up a lot of the stuff with what guys are hearing that's not always the case."
