Areas The Gamecocks Need To See Improve From 2022
To truly excel and compete at the highest level, teams must perform consistently in all areas. There are three key areas that the Gamecocks will look to show improvement: quarterback pressure, third-down efficiency, and discipline to minimize penalties.
Firstly, let's consider quarterback pressure. During the 2022 season, the Gamecocks managed to get to the quarterback just 20 times, six of which came against Kentucky alone. To put this into perspective, the Gamecocks ranked 110th in the nation last season in quarterback pressures. The defensive line must strengthen their ability to pressure the quarterback more effectively. The less time the quarterback has to process, the more opportunities this defense will have to get off the field and force turnovers.
Secondly, the Gamecocks' performance on third downs needs a significant overhaul. With a success rate of only 39% on offense, they frequently missed opportunities to extend their drives last Fall. On the defensive side, they allowed opponents to succeed 43% of the time, ranking them 114th at the FBS level. The team needs to improve play-calling and execution on these critical downs. Better third-down efficiency could mean more scoring opportunities and less for their opponents, which can help keep momentum in their favor.
Lastly, the issue of penalties must be addressed. The Gamecocks totaled 90 penalties for 829 yards in the 2022 season and ranked 105th nationally in penalties per game. Each penalty not only resulted in lost yardage but also potentially disrupted the team's rhythm and handed the advantage to opponents. By reducing penalties, the Gamecocks could maintain better control over the game flow and boost their chances of victory.
The Gamecocks could have a promising season if they focus on these critical areas. Improving quarterback pressure, enhancing third-down efficiency, and minimizing penalties could drastically change the team's dynamic. As the team and coaches delve into training sessions and review game tapes, they have the opportunity to identify and rectify these issues, propelling the Gamecocks to a successful 2023 season.
