How Shane Beamer's Assessing The First Five Weeks Of The Season
There was probably no team in college football that had a more challenging five-week stretch to start the season than Shane Beamer and the South Carolina Gamecocks. The third-year headman and his team played three conference games and faced off against four opponents ranked at their respective classifications. Three of those teams, as mentioned above, were Top 25 teams at the Power 5 level, and each of those matchups took place away from Williams-Brice Stadium.
However, as most major college football coaches would say, extenuating circumstances can't excuse how a football team performs, and the Gamecocks have left a lot to be desired in certain aspects on both sides of the ball. On Wednesday, during the weekly SEC Teleconference Call, Shane Beamer was asked how he goes about assessing every aspect of the team during the bye week, and he made it clear that he strips everything down to the nuts and bolts to try and figure out how he can make his team better.
"You look back schematically. Are we doing the things we need to be doing in all three phases? Is [there] maybe schematically something we want to do that we just don't quite have the personnel for right now? So we've done that in all three phases," Beamer explained. "You look at personnel. Are there some guys that maybe haven't been playing that can help us? This is a week to get them opportunities to see what they can do. Are there guys that have been playing that maybe would be better suited to play somewhere different at that position? Those are things you look at and really just get back to work."
The Gamecocks practiced Monday through Wednesday this week and are currently getting some extra off time, as they won't meet back up in the building until next Monday. Based on his comments yesterday, the head man feels that South Carolina didn't waste the practices they did hold during their "off week."
"[I] certainly feel like we've gotten better as a team during these three days and really appreciate the effort and energy that our players have practiced with the last three days. They've been fantastic and have a great eagerness and desire to improve."
