OPINION: Shane Beamer, South Carolina Hosting Ole Miss & Missouri In 2024 Is Huge
When it comes to teams South Carolina can face from the SEC, the Missouri Tigers and Ole Miss Rebels aren't necessarily at the top of the list regarding marquee conference games Gamecock fans want to see. Missouri has always felt like an outsider regarding their overall fit in the conference since they joined back in 2012, while South Carolina and the Rebels have only squared off eight times since the Gamecocks joined the SEC back in 1992.
However, based on the series history the Gamecocks have with both Missouri and Ole Miss, having both of these matchups take place in Williams-Brice Stadium in 2024 might be more beneficial than some people may realize. South Carolina has played Ole Miss and Missouri seventeen and thirteen times, respectively, throughout their history and has had multiple close bouts with both programs.
In the seventeen matchups South Carolina has played with Ole Miss, thirteen of the seventeen contests have been decided by 8 points or less, including five of the last six meetings. In the thirteen matchups South Carolina has played with Missouri, six have been decided by 8 points or less.
There's rarely been a time when South Carolina has played Ole Miss or Missouri and one team completely overmatched the other in terms of the final score. With how competitive the SEC conference is going to be from 2024 onward, teams outside of Georgia and maybe Alabama will take anything they can get in terms of weekly wins, so South Carolina hosting two teams in Missouri and Ole Miss, they've historically been evenly-matched with in 2024 will serve them well in this new era of SEC Football.
