What A Successful Season Looks Like For Spencer Rattler
Success in college football is measured on a broad spectrum. From individual accolades, team achievements to post-season awards, what does a successful season for Spencer Rattler look like? Is it being in the Heisman Race? Is it leading the nation in passing yards? Is it making it to a New Years 6 Bowl? We do know that a successful season for Spencer Rattler and the South Carolina football program would involve several vital factors—leadership, performance, production, and Wins and Losses.
Strong Leadership
As the starting quarterback, Rattler must provide exceptional leadership on and off the field. He should set a positive example for his teammates, motivate them, and effectively communicate with the coaching staff, areas that have seen growth from Spencer this offseason.
Improved Consistency
Rattler will also need to demonstrate growth and improvement in his on-field performance. This would involve making better decisions and, thus, reducing turnovers, improving accuracy, and increasing his overall efficiency as a passer, which will go hand-in-hand with the next aspect that will define his season.
Offensive Production
Rattler's success will primarily be reflected, by the media and fans, in the team's offensive production. He's expected to lead the offense effectively, consistently move the chains, and help his side of the ball put points on the board. This encompasses everything mentioned to this point:
- Making smart reads
- Efficiently distributing the ball to his playmakers
- Executing the offensive game plan effectively
Win-Loss Record
Lastly, a successful season for Rattler and the South Carolina football program would likely include an improvement in the team's win-loss record. While individual performance is essential, ultimately, a quarterback's success is also often measured by the team's success. Rattler would need to help lead his team to victories against a daunting schedule, potentially leading to a competitive record and, hopefully, a big bowl game appearance.
A successful season for Spencer Rattler and the South Carolina football program would involve all these contributing factors. Now what does that look like with a number on it? 3,800 yards? 35 touchdowns? That's for the fan to decide. For me, a successful season for Rattler emphasizes decision-making and allowing the team to compete in every game. When push comes to shove, I envision a successful season for Spencer looking like at least an eight-win season where he helps the team improve, allowing the next generation of Gamecocks to build off of it.
