WATCH: Stephen A. Smith Takes A Subtle Shot At South Carolina
There are few, if any, bigger voices when it comes to sports talk or the sports debate sphere than Stephen A. Smith. A commentator for the most-watched sports debate show on cable television, ESPN's First Take, the North Carolina native covers a bevy of topics across multiple sports.
One of the biggest conversation pieces in sports for the past nine months has been Deion Sanders reclamation project at Colorado, a school that's, quite frankly, been living in college football irrelevancy over the past fifteen years prior to Sanders' arrival. The name Deion Sanders carries enough caché as is, due to his long and successful career as an athlete, having won a World Series ring in MLB and a Super Bowl in the NFL, with "Prime" being a hall of famer in the latter.
On Wednesday's edition of First Take, Stephen A. Smith and Chris "Mad Dog" Russo were talking about where or not Deion will stay at Colorado in the long-run. Smith argued that Sanders newfound success in Boulder is the reason why he should look at going to a different school in the future, and mentioned a fellow SEC foe for South Carolina in the Florida Gators, pointing to the fact that Florida State, the school where Deion Sanders rose to stardom, didn't hire him as their head coach.
While making the argument for how Deion could bring Florida back to national prominence, Smith took a dig at South Carolina, saying "Nobody's thinking about Florida right now. We celebrate when they beat South Carolina! I mean c'mon. This is not the Florida of old."
Shane Beamer has proven to be a coach that keeps receipts when media members take digs at his program. Should the Gamecocks defeat the Florida Gators on October 14th, we'll see if this is a quote that's pulled from Beamer's mental file cabinet.
