Potential Position Battles To Watch: Offense
Dowell Loggains is set to begin his first season as the new offensive coordinator for South Carolina's Football team after his predecessor Marcus Satterfield left to take the same position at Nebraska after the 2022 regular season. Loggains will have the luxury of possessing multiple future NFL talents in his unit, like quarterback Spencer Rattler and wide receiver Antwane "Juice" Wells.
However, other positions on this side of the ball could see intense competition in August in order for the coaching staff to find out which player is best suited to be in their starting lineup. Which positions fall into this category?
Right Tackle
This is the one position on offense that is most unlikely to remain undecided until the latter stages of Fall camp. The two most likely contenders at this spot are redshirt junior Tyshawn Wannamaker and redshirt freshman Cason Henry.
Wannamaker was named a freshman All-SEC selection in 2021 and has started eleven games while playing in twenty overall. However, Tyshawn has struggled with consistency throughout his career, especially in pass protection. Henry was named the best offensive scout team player in his true freshman campaign and has been lauded by head Shane Beamer multiple times this offseason for his progress on the field.
Charlotte transfer Jaxon Hughes shouldn't be counted out here either, but Wannamaker and Henry figure to be the two primary combatants at right tackle next month.
Running Back
The mention of this position group should surprise no one who's followed the team closely. Juju McDowell, Dakereon Joyner, Newberry transfer Mario Anderson Jr., and incoming freshman Dontavious Braswell could all make the case to be the Gamecocks starting back this coming Fall.
They all bring different skill sets to the field, and while it'll likely be running back-by-committee no matter what in 2023, the coaches would undoubtedly like to see one of these players fully take the reigns in preseason camp.
Right Guard
This selection is more so based on gut feel than anything else, but despite veteran Trai Jones accumulating most of the snaps at the position in Spring practice, Markee Anderson's sponge-like mind has quickly garnered praise from offensive line coach Lonnie Teasley and head coach Shane Beamer.
Beamer, in particular, has stated that Anderson "will play this season," and if there's any spot that could be open for Markee right now, it's the right guard spot.
